Terra Chã - Alfarge

Dedicated Lisbon-based eclectic DJ Fabrizio Reinolds and professional music producer Ricardo Fialho wanted to do something that they couldn’t find, so they got to work. Over the years they crafted a project together that has built a solid catalogue, with a sound that is known to be quite particular.
The result is made up of a diverse array of tracks (that span anything from ethnic-flavoured jazzy downbeat to underground deep bangers) and there’s plenty to get into throughout their output. One thing transpires clearly, though, and that’s both their refined sense of their own culture, and the way in which they use it, subtly, to their advantage.
Either by smartly sampling fado songs or by using audio excerpts spoken by famous portuguese poets and philosophers, their music grows alive through the proud usage of their own language while facing an international market. As things are now, it’s not a long shot to say Terra Chã are one of Portugal’s most interesting production outfits and “Alfarge” is the EP many were hoping for.
There’s a lot to get into, through the four tracks. Both “Bunda Falls” and “Inquieto” stand out as unique pieces of danceable yet chilled music, fusing elements of jazz, african music, smart breaks and beats and that aforementioned “tuga” flavour. With clean, tonal intros and outros, these tracks can either be finely mixed into other dreamy soundscapes but also beat-blended into the most daring DJ sets. The remixes are by no means behind: Percebes’s central figure Hélder Russo delivers a deep, rumbling, midtempo beatdown remix in a style that is quite his own, while rising local talent Moreno Ácido slams “Inquieto” into an incredible floor thumper that borrows elements of kuduro and afro beats to craft an singular four to the floor house thumber, a peak time production for those who know how to rock a crowd.
An overall diverse and rich release, “Alfarge” is Terra Chã’s most accomplished EP so far and Percebes’s new evidence of both the label’s surprising curation but also of their fine taste and wealthy artistic resources.
